Teaching In China

Hello Everyone,
If you have come to this page then must be at least slightly interested in my exploration and experiences in China. This opportunity has been provided to me, and my fellow participants by the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, if you are interested in learning more please do not hesitate to look at some of the amazing work this organization is doing. I am participating in the NCUSCR's Teacher Exchange Program which has been sending K-12 educators to china since 1996. Please enjoy my PG-13 Chinese exploits.

Happy Teacher's Day All

Ninmen Hao!
National Teacher's Day Is Awesome! I had no classes today, and I still had a dozen students come to find me to give me a card or a gift or to just thank me... I wasn't really sure what to do at first, this whole thing is very un-High school...
One of my gifts: Blueberry Lay's Very odd (I also got Green tea and Red Tomato)
We played games (as a staff) and there wasn't a single person who held back.  I found this odd, there was no pretense, to plan from the administration, no ulterior motive, just plain fun.  In fact the whole thing was planned by teachers for teachers.  I only saw the administrators twice (once at the tug-of-war and once announcing a winner).  We still have a banquet tonight with many performances (including mine... crud) but here are some photos from today:
I named this the "Balloon Sandwich Relay" if anyone knows the real name please let m know)
Whose that handsome giant anchor for the Junior 1 tug-of-war Team?
Victory is sweet, but man it's hot here.
Best game ever? I Think So!
Huh... Where's Ben?
My camera girl, seems a bit distracted...
I made the news here, Apparently I'm 1.9 meters tall... I have no idea if that is even reasonable...
I'll post pictures from the banquet tomorrow.  Please keep posting, I really enjoy reading everything you guys have to say.

  1. Well, hell, I'm sort of starting to feel a little resentment when I read your blog...I want to go to China and have kids give me presents and have a bunch of cute Chinese ladies huddle around me and have a day off to play games and a banquet...I got a lanyard and a t-shirt and a kid farted in class which caused a ridiculous scene- so there. - Nic

  2. Hmmm....a potential Asian bride in the mix? Loved the photo of you anchoring the tug-of-war, I would have placed you in the same spot. Don't know about the "Blueberry" Lays you received, were they any good? Hey one more thing....check your email. I sent/forwarded a message to you from Tamara (NCTA) about the $$$ we can spend and I would love to have your feedback. One of the attachments provides a list of materials we can pick from. Love Nicci's comment, sporting my t-shirt today, so there!

  4. I got the stink eye multiple times for not wearing my t-shirt today...BUT One of my fourteen year old male students in class today: "I miss summer because I miss the sight of Matt Lauer's face." (he was dead serious)

  7. Just noticed that besides "Ben" and "1.9", the only other english in the article is "NBA" and that "NBA" appears to be included in a quote from someone. Are you telling people that before your time as teacher you were in the NBA? I know you're a giant over there, but come on man, messing with the press isn't cool. Hope all is well.
