Teaching In China

Hello Everyone,
If you have come to this page then must be at least slightly interested in my exploration and experiences in China. This opportunity has been provided to me, and my fellow participants by the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, if you are interested in learning more please do not hesitate to look at some of the amazing work this organization is doing. I am participating in the NCUSCR's Teacher Exchange Program which has been sending K-12 educators to china since 1996. Please enjoy my PG-13 Chinese exploits.

Lantern Festival

 Nimon Hao!
So Chinese New year is officially over.  For those of you who do not know, Spring Festival (the New Year celebration) actually lasts the first 15 days of the lunar new year ending with the Lantern Festival (and another Armageddon-esk firework bombardment).  So here is my last "Vacation" blog... School starts on Saturday, yup, this week actually has two Mondays and two Tuesdays before my first Wednesday.... gonna be a long week.

This new driver is practicing in his inflatable-dog-go-kart... SWEET!
Did I mention that it's the year of the rabbit...  the oddly drawn rabbit...
Dinner with Amy and Brenda, I'm a lucky dude here
Here are some of the many lanterns around the city.
Wang Cheng Park is one of the main attractions during this celebration.  Many of the displays here are animatronic as well.
Like this fighting Dragon and Tiger, Sweet!
Amelia was kind enough to guide and explain many of the displays to me.
Some of the displays actually represent important places around Luoyang (here is Baima Su)
As I've Talked about before, the Dragon and Phoenix are super important here
Here they are bobbing their heads to the music.... there was no music...

Floating Bunny Heads...
Run Amelia!!! That glowing goose has spotted you!!!
There's a zoo in this park somewhere, but It wasn't this way...

No I've tried to disspell many of the stereotypes of China and Asians.... but having a street performance where you show how good at math you are doesn't help my mission very much...
One of the many performances on Lantern day "Dancing Drummers"
Another crucial demonstration is the Lion dance (commonly mistaken for a dragon dance)
Oh My God! That Lion is eating an old lady!
The People masks are way creepier than the Lions...

What're you lookin' at?
The Lions sure enjoy showing their stuff

It's so crowded here...
Here's the other side of the line

Here are some fo teh performers with Jessica, Zach, and David Bowie (from the Sound+Vision Tour)...
Living Large on that ride...
More "traditional" (yet not quite traditional) lanterns

My attempted photographs of fireworks... May be time for a better camera...
Well, as I mentioned, class starts up again soon, so who knows what the new semester might bring.  For those of you interested, I have officially notified the District that I will be returning next year, so now they know exactly where to send my contract and my benefits package.

Spring Festival (3 days in)

Xinnian Hao!

This should be good, about 150 ft of firecrackers (over 1200 crakcers)

Six boxes jerry-rigged (or is it jury rigged) into 1 really loud and awesome
Enjoy this 8 minuted video...

Here is the aftermath

This will be left for two days (it supposed to bring luck)

Walking on the "red carpet" will help give you better fortune in the coming year.

Here's everyone that was willing to be awake so early on the first day of the year.

Me and Mr. Zhai, attempting to be the same highet...

Here's Guanlin Square out side of Guanlin Temple,

People buy more fireworks ad just add them to the middle of the square, some times they don;t even need to light them.

There also a huge temple fair

Really it's just like any other fair... just way more crowded

These fruit shaped balloons were pretty cool...

Amelia (Wu Yan) was my guide for the day.  She teaches Junior 3 and Er Wai.

Here's one of the amazing paintings in the temple

Here's Guan Yu's headstone, a very famous general in Chinese history

A fancy horse...

It's fancy rider...

Each ribbon represents one person's hopes for the new year.

The Dragon-head cypress... you pray under this tree to have a son who will bring you great fortune.

This is Guan Yu's wife's alter.

Amelia and I tried to go to another public park after Guanlin, but we ran into the rest of Luoyang had the same idea...

Our walk back we passed this poor mad was trying to break his boat out of the frozen river... I'm not really sure how he got there in the first place...

Amelia on the frozen bridge

It is in fact the Year of the Rabbit(s)

Sweet steamed dumplings... aren't the just adorable?

This poor little guy has no clue what he's in for...

Enjoy the Super Bowl!
